Microblogging platform X — formerly Twitter — plans to make sweeping and substantial overhauls to the search experience, according to the platform's owner, Elon Musk.
Musk stated that the platform will add the ability to search by the semantics and meanings of words to find content related to what platform users are searching for.
Searching by semantics and their meanings aims to try to understand the purpose behind the search process, without just matching the search terms to the tweets they contain. This process is sometimes called “contextual search”.
This technology allows results closely related to search terms to be shown, even when the same search terms are absent from the Tweets.
Unlike the traditional search process, the new technology relies on analyzing search terms using artificial intelligence models to learn their context and purpose, and display the associated results.
Musk stated that the new search technology is still under development at the present time, and that the first stage of it will focus on understanding search terms related to current events and popular topics, while the later stages will focus on “expanding the capabilities of contextual understanding,” as he put it.
However, the development of this technology is complex and requires a lot of data that the X platform may be missing compared to other major companies.
It is reported that Google has already been using this technology in its search engine for more than ten years.
This step comes as part of Musk's strategy to transform the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, after its acquisition, into a "super app" that includes many integrated services, following the example of the Chinese application "WeChat".
