Google Ends Unlimited WhatsApp Backup Storage

On November 16, 2023, Google announced that it will be ending unlimited WhatsApp backup storage, effective August 2, 2024.

Google has been offering unlimited WhatsApp backup storage since 2018, through its Google Drive service. This has been a valuable feature for users who want to keep a backup of their conversations and data on WhatsApp.

However, Google has decided to end this feature due to the increasing amount of data being stored on Google Drive. The company said that the amount of data being stored on Google Drive has increased by 50% in the past year, and that this growth cannot continue without taking action.

As of August 2, 2024, users will be able to store WhatsApp backups for free up to 15 GB. After that, users will need to subscribe to a Google Drive storage plan if they want to store more data.

Here are some tips for users who want to prepare for the end of unlimited WhatsApp backup storage:

  • Check the size of your WhatsApp backup. You can do this by going to WhatsApp settings > Storage and Data > Backup.
  • If your WhatsApp backup is too large, consider deleting some messages or conversations. You can do this by going to WhatsApp settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage.
  • If you need to store more data, consider subscribing to a Google Drive storage plan. You can find more information about storage plans on the Google Drive website.

It is worth noting that this feature will only end for WhatsApp backups that are stored on Google Drive.

Users will still be able to store WhatsApp backups on their smartphones.
